SMITE Becomes Most Metal MOBA with MANOWAR Collaboration

If you’re like me you’ve played your handful of MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas.) You like em. You think they are pretty cool. But you want something more… You need those double bass drums. That 15 minute long guitar solo. Lyrics about riding on the back of a dragon, blowing up castles and getting all of the virgin princesses.

Thankfully, Hi-Rez Studios has heard your call, and wants to envelope you in a jagged, yet somehow warm and cuddly blanket of metal tunes while you are siegeing towers and getting seriously pissed at the guy who APPARENTLY DOESN’T HAVE EYEBALLS BECAUSE THAT’S THE THIRD TIME HE DIDN’T CALL MISSING ON BOTTOM LANE.

Sorry… um.

Hi-Rez is teaming up with the well known and respected metal band MANOWAR (pictured below, careful ladies, you might want to get a moisture absorption device for your chair.) So now, in addition to the unique third-person perspective, SMITE will have arguably one of the best MOBA soundtracks in the business.

SMITE is set to be released in Q1 2013 and is currently in a closed beta. Coming from the MOBA family of games, there are going to be a lot of similarities, but two things really set it apart: the perspective and the fact that all skills and spells must be aimed (no auto-aim!)

Check out the video below, and if you’re interested in trying the game out you can sign up for the beta here!

League of Legends: Jayce Patch Preview and Sneak Peek

Today, Riot Games announced a sneak peek at its forthcoming champion, Jayce, the Defender of Tomorrow. Jayce is a champion for Piltover and as a scientific genius, promises to have some fun abilities. His weapon is the Mercury Hammer, which converts into the Mercury Cannon, allowing him to have both melee and ranged attacks.  Riot also released the Jayce’s Patch Preview video. This patch will contain changes to existing Champions Orianna, Nunu, Shen, Karthus, Soraka and LeBlanc in addition to making Jayce playable.

Orianna will see a shorter cooldowns on all abilities  but decreased damage on Command: Attack. Command: Dissonance is getting a buff to its AP ratio while Command: Protect is getting a longer cast range and tether. Her passive, Clockwork Windup, is also going to need fewer stacks to get the attack buff. Overall she’s shaping up to have a lot more utility in team fights and should finally have the ability to really combo attacks effectively.

Nunu is having his jungling skills buffed, specifically his abilities that will allow him to be a good counter jungler. Consume is getting a lower cooldown and higher damage at lower levels and will require less attacks to trigger the Visionary passive. Having a longer uptime on Visionary makes him less dependent on Red buff as some other junglers and the increased damage on Consume is going to allow him to be much more effective at stealing buffs as well as allowing him to be a pretty quick jungle.

LeBlanc is getting a shorter cooldown on Distortion as well as increased missile speed on Sigil of Silence. Her ultimate is getting an interesting twist. If she casts Distortion and Mimicked Distortion right after each other, she can choose which origin point to jump back to, giving her a lot more flexibility and will allow her to keep opponents guessing where she’ll blink to next.

Shen, Karthus and Soraka are all seeing longer cooldowns on their ultimates to bring them more inline with Champions who don’t have global ultimates and require much more positioning to be effective.

As always, the Patch Preview video can be found on Riot’s YouTube Channel  and the Jayce sneak peek can be found on the League of Legends site. I think Jayce should be an entertaining character, but what do you think? Will he be a day one champion for you?

League of Legends Hacked!

League of Legends developers Riot Games have issued a statement detailing a recent security breach of the EU servers. Sadly, this means that some player information went missing- so if you’re on a European server, please be aware!

The servers in question are EU Nordic & East and EU West, which I would imagine covers the whole continent of Europe. I’m okay, as I’ve never touched League of Legends (…hahaha yet.) Riot says that while no credit card or payment information was accessed- names of player characters, dates of birth and security questions were all stolen in the attack. The company says that the ‘specific security issue’ has now been fixed, and is notifying all players involved.

In a response, the company have stated:

  • We’ve fixed the specific security issue that hackers exploited.
  • Over the next 24 hours, we’ll be notifying all EUW and EUNE players via email; although only a portion of players might have been affected, we consider broader notification a good security precaution.
  • We’ll be updating this post with the latest on this situation and will monitor comments here for questions that require further clarification.
  • Our investigation into this issue is ongoing – we’ve hired experts and are working with the relevant authorities to more thoroughly understand causes, culprits, and preventative measures to make future breaches less likely.
  • We’ve redirected teams to quickly implement new security measures that will help improve the safety of your data.
  • We’ll continue to invest in security measures, including password hashing and data encryption, state-of-the-art firewalls, SSL, security ninjas, and other security measures to make your info safer. We’ve been humbled by this experience and know that nothing guarantees the security of Internet-connected systems such as League of Legends. We can simply promise to try our very best to protect your data.

We’re sorry

Brandon and I want to sincerely and personally apologize to you for this situation. We take your privacy and security seriously, and we’re working diligently to improve it for the better.

Talk about bad timing for the company. With the whole Major League Gaming championships going on at the moment, I couldn’t feel more sorry for them. So if you play on one of these servers, please check your emails and pray that you’re not one of the people targeted by the security breach.

Guardians of Middle-Earth Announced

Warner Bros Interactive is going at another Lord of the Rings title with Monolith entitled, “Guardians of Middle-Earth.” According to their Facebook page, Guardians of Middle-Earth is a MOBA game like League of Legends coming to Xbox Live Arcade and the Playstation Network this coming fall. The game will have 20 of your favorite Lord of the Rings characters including Gandalf, Sauron and Gollum. Of course all of the heroes haven’t been named yet, but I bet it’s safe to say that you can expect to see most of the Fellowship in the game.

The game is being developed by the guys over at Monolith Production who also happened to make the F.E.A.R series we have all come to know and love. With all that said, there isn’t a whole lot of info on the game aside from a lot of speculation. Hopefully it won’t end up like Lord of the Rings: War in the North, but with Monolith Productions developing this game, it’s safe to assume that this will be one of 2012’s top titles.

You can expect the game to release in Fall of this year just in time for the release of the film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
