Patent Trolling

July 25th, 2012 by Nickie Williams

If you’ve had your eye on the news today, you will have seen that there’s finally been the dodgy rip-off of the Sony PS Vita emerge from China. Now, coming out of a country that is rife with piracy and plagarism- this is really not a surprise to me. I saw this handheld about a month ago, and a first glance I honestly did think it was the PS Vita…until I looked closer.

It’s really funny how many patents they must have broken putting this console together, to name a few off the top of my head there is:

  • Droid- Motorola patent
  • X360- Microsoft patent
  • Casing shape- Sony patent
  • Dpad- Nintendo patent

Basically, the console is not really a console at all. It’s a Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet squeezed into a ripped-off Sony PS Vita casing. It runs both Chrome and Google Play, which of course means you can play all your usual Android games. But the handheld comes pre-loaded with a bunch of emulators, enabling you to play Nintendo, Sega and other games besides. Fancy playing Golden Axe or Alex Kidd? This is your machine.

Watching videos of the machine on YouTube, it doesn’t look like the built-in touchscreen is much up to snuff- but with the controls that it is equipped with, it almost seems like they expect you to play the emulators on the console. What do I think of the whole thing? I’m not so excited about it, I am a Nintendo fan and bleed red and green with the colours of Mario and Luigi. I’d never buy anything Sony- not even a cheap knock-off version. It’s good for what it is, but as we all know in the gaming world- the Chinese really don’t give two hoots about patent lawsuits so they just blatently steal things from other companies to make a quick buck for themselves.

It’s what they do. But if this has amused you somewhat, go onto YouTube and search for more oddball Chinese consoles. They will make you laugh, I promise you :)
