UPDATE: Kotaku is now reporting additional information. According to sources, 38 Studios and the Amalur developer Big Huge Games had their entire staffs laid off. An anonymous source also leaked information that the company had not paid employees since May 1st and that they found out about the end of their insurance coverage when an employee’s pregnant wife was told her coverage would expire tomorrow. In addition, the company has not communicated any of this directly to employees.
Polygon is reporting that company sources at 38 Studios, the troubled company behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and the Project Copernicus MMO has laid off their entire staff of employees.
News broke earlier this month of the company’s financial issues which could cause a major dept to the taxpayers of Rhode Island, the company’s home state. While feelings were alleviated by the announcement of Copernicus, this is a clear sign of major trouble if this story proves accurate.
We’ll keep you posted as more news develops.
