Just recently, I caught wind a really interesting title coming from Sony Online Entertainment and developed by a Swedish company called Overkill Software called PAYDAY: The Heist. The concept is quite brilliant. Taking the vibe of survival titles like Left 4 Dead and Dead Island, PAYDAY pits you and three friends as part of a heist team, tackling objectives like “blowing off the roof of a building to extract a safe via helicopter or emptying the vault at the First World Bank”, according to the game’s official website.

The 4-man concept is tried and true, but the heist framework adds a whole new element to this type of multiplayer game. It’s the perfect example of how a run-and-gun style of gameplay could get you or your friends killed, and while it may be open to griefing, it could also prove to backfire as individual parts of the team can get captured by police (and, if you want, negotiated for with hostages). Each of the initial heists will feature non-scripted enemy behavior and intense action which will require a quick wit and careful planning to overcome.

Players can also specialize their characters down any of three progression trees, unlocking weapons and abilities along the way, but also allowing for the ability to mix and match. Spec down a tree to unlock one weapon, then spec down a different tree to get a different weapon without losing what you already earned. Time consuming, but useful if played right.

The game can also feature AI partners, but truth be told this is a game for four friends. PAYDAY: The Heist will be available later this year for PlayStation 3 and PC and offer Downloadable Content for additional heists. PAYDAY is also exclusively digitally distributed and will offer a price of “less than half of a retail game”. Can’t beat that, can you?
