Making an appearance earlier today from the Cologne Palladium in Germany, Electronic Arts kicked off the 2011 GamesCom with a press conference previewing games to come, release dates for the upcoming quarter, and new announcements on some heavily buzzed names. Of these, Star Wars: The Old Republic was among those discussed.

With the co-founder of BioWare, Dr. Ray Muzyka, starting off the presentation with a special intro trailer in German (paying respect to the expo of course) he goes on to state, “Our goal is to set a new standard for an MMO launch. Thousands of of testers have already been in early testing and the feedback has been great.” Muzyka continued in saying that with the instrumental response received thus far, fans within the SW:TOR community can expect beta test weekends to launch in the coming months. Now while it’s been speculated that we could be seeing the live launch some time in November, no firm date has been confirmed yet.

Handing things over to Lead Game Designer, Gabe Amatangelo, all eyes on the presentation got a first look at the first live gameplay demo of  ”Operations”. To those unfamiliar, this is comparable to that of an MMO raid. Titled the “Eternity Vault” a team of 8-16 players band together as a group to assault “the threats of the galaxy” by way of strategy and full on damage. In this particular Operation, the Eternity Vault is an ancient prison that “houses an enemy older than that of the Republic and the Empire.” It appeared as if this particular instance was an Empire raid only, but that has yet to be determined until live launch.
